The GlenAllachie Distillery Solar Panels
The GlenAllachie Distillery Solar Panels

As an SME, we strive to do our bit to reduce our carbon footprint and be environmentally responsible. The following practices are what we do currently, with plans to expand this following our successful SIETF (Scottish Industrial Energy Transformation Fund) grant application.

  • Reduction in output from 4 million Litres of Alcohol (LOA) to 1 million LOA results in reduced energy use
  • On-site warehousing – 16 on-site warehouses mean there is no need for haulage of casks

On-site Warehousing at The GlenAllachie Distillery

  • 134 solar panels were installed in a neighbouring field to power our distillery in the most green manner possible
  • Pot ale is processed into bio-gas at a nearby digestion plant, which can be used for electricity generation or returned to the gas grid
  • Pre-heat our wash using hot pot ale from previous distillation
  • Pre-heat our low wines & feints using the hot spent lees from previous distillation
  • Excess heat from our production area is used for underfloor heating in our bar and tasting lounge

Still House at The GlenAllachie Distillery

  • Heat recovery system, which uses heat from the condensate to assist in heating contents of heating tank 2
  • Battery-operated forklifts in operation at our warehouses
  • Warm water recovery from worts cooling is used to reduce energy consumption compared to starting with cold water

  • Exclusively work with UK suppliers for all our packaging materials – more expensive but significant reduction in carbon footprint
  • Our labels are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) approved, which means that we comply with strict paper manufacturing measures and tree planting requirements.
  • Our labels are also digitally printed, using 80% less material than conventional printing techniques.
  • Our glass bottles are 100% recyclable and create no waste or by-products during production.
  • Our cartons are made from 100% virgin fibre pulp sourced from well-managed, sustainable forests. They have been designed with minimum waste to accommodate the distinctive bottle, reducing the pack’s weight and the associated carbon emissions.
  • Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points installed at the distillery for visitor use, powered by our solar panels
  • On-site beehive to promote the ecosystem in our locality
